I have an app installed on my phone called Freedom. Basically it allows for you to choose times of the day where you’re able to use a given app and times of the day where you’d like to lock certain apps from your phone. If you click on that app during a period of time where it is locked, it will come up with the following screen:
I cannot tell you how relaxed this notification makes me. My whole body seems to grow calm at the thought of ‘waking up’ to this fundamental reality that I am free and although I am witnessing a behavior emerging on autopilot (ie. opening Instagram for no other reason than the fact that it’s there and I’ve associated its usage with hits of dopamine) I do not actually need to go beyond this momentary reflex. Further, the fact that I have support from my phone to disengage from my phone is a caring and welcome surprise.
I can do what I want ???!!!! Enjoy the moment?! Yes! Fancy that! Because the truth is I do not want to engage with this frenzy of the senses at all! To echo the sentiments of the Apostle Paul (who I tend to disagree with on many things but strongly agree with here) :
