I've announced live shows for March of next year!
I'll be playing at BlueNote in New York for a residency of 4 shows across 2 nights.
One thing that really gets my creative juices going is the challenge of building a new live show in a format I haven’t done before and with songs I’ve never played before. All the options spread before me — a vision I can devote to myself to without any previous rules to play by. There are so many interesting ways the songs could be translated and it will involve a lot of experimentation to breathe new life into them. I imagine these shows will also involve a lot of improvisation which is, of course, my favourite thing of all.
So I’m happy to announce I’ll be performing my first full band performance of songs from my latest album, “Idols & Vices Vol. 1” at the BlueNote In New York City over two nights for my residency in March.
I will be playing four shows:
March 25th at 6pm + 10pm, then March 26th at 6pm + 10pm
…and it just so happens that my birthday is the next day :)
If you happen to be living in New York, this will be a very special residency and I encourage you to jump in quick to buy tickets at the link HERE.
I’m still deciding how I will perform the songs and who I will bring in to birth the vision with me. The evening will likely consist of jazzy re-interpretations of songs from the new album plus some from my back catalogue — all designed to suit this iconic venue.
The show will also be filmed for those of you that don’t live in New York but maybe you’re planning a trip in 2025 and want to make these shows part of your time in New York! I’d be delighted to see you.
Also…
I’m currently in London for something very special that I’ll speak more about soon. The weather is gloomy as ever, there’s no question, but this city still retains it’s charm and magnetic diversity reminding me of why I loved it so much when I first visited on an extensive writing trip for The Golden Echo.
To close, here is a video I just uploaded on YouTube from the last time I popped up at BlueNote to perform “Keen” with the legendary Robert Glasper, Chris Dave (yes, D’Angelo’s drummer,) Derrick Hodge and Jahi Lake.
It’s a small taste of how the upcoming shows could sound as I plan this new series of live adventures.
Don’t forget to jump on these tickets before they go if you’re in New York. I plan to make this one to remember.
I would also love to offer a meet and greet for any of my Substack subscribers that come to the show, so if you decide to do so, we shall arrange that!
With love,
I'm glad to hear the residency will be filmed, and hope the video will be available in some venue I will be able to view it. Might be nice if the live versions of some of your songs were released on music streaming services, too, if that's possible, especially if you reimagine some of the songs from Idols & Vices without guest male singers. Not that I have anything against males, being one myself. When it comes to contemporary music, I simply prefer the sound of the female voice. Maybe it's that so many contemporary male vocalists come off to me as too rough or too whiny for my tastes. :)
Some very lucky substack readers indeed! I was lucky to have met you back in Perth, Australia. One of the best days of my life.
Have a wonderful birthday afterwards!
