The Animated World of "Idols & Vices"

A conversation with animator, Greg Sharp.

It takes a damn village to make an album, especially when it comes to the visual world. Anyone who’s been following me for a while knows that this aspect of artistic expression is almost as important to me as the music itself.

In 2023 I called on Greg Sharp of Truba Animation to create the 14 episodes for “Idols & Vices, Vol.1”

I discovered Greg via this extremely weird, compelling and absurd music video he made for one of my favourite bands (also fronted by a Kiwi) called Unknown Mortal Orchestra. His made this for an alternative, unreleased version of the song Layla (which I actually prefer more than the original version!)

I quickly realized we were on the same page creatively so we got working at once to establish the colour palette, feeling and aesthetic of this trippy landscape I would now live inside.

Today I am sharing with you an exclusive and in-depth conversation with myself and the talented NZ animator. Throughout this chat we go into depth on how he built the incredible universe of this album and the psychedelic cast of characters.
